What Age Is Too Old To Pursue Medicine? When I'm Wearing Banana Republic Factory, No Age Is Too Old!
As a woman in her late 20s pursuing medicine by taking pre-meds, I see a lot of questions on social media and internet forums about young women and men who are hesitant to pursue medicine because they are in their late 20s or early 30s. I even saw a 25 year old who felt that they were past the age of being able to pursue medicine!
LESSON #1: STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO A STANDARD THAT IS NOT THE STANDARD AT ALL
It's so unreal that people feel this way. To be honest, I felt the same way for a while. Until I decided that I wasn't going to let "what-ifs" stop me from being who God called me to be! Who says you have to start medical school at 21 or 22? Let's first address the truth that many (not all) 21/22 year olds in medical school have barely had an opportunity to figure out who they are and what they truly want out of life. Many are unstable and thrown about by any wind that comes their way. Many of those physicians reach 30 or 40 and are still trying to figure out their passions, their hobbies, what they love because they haven't been able to take the time out and figure it out for themselves. Many physicians who started medical school at age 21/22 don't even understand money and the way finances or financial management works. They can't read or understand contracts. They don't understand simple adult responsibilities that people who graduate medical school should be able to know and do. This is not to put them down - this is to say you are comparing yourself to a standard that is NOT the standard at all! You don't see what they deal with behind closed doors. You just see the short white coat! Because they come out of medical school with a medical degree at age 25/26, does not mean they have it all together. So first lesson - a medical student who graduates and becomes a doctor at age 25/26 does not have it all together. Many are not stable. Stop comparing yourself to a standard that should not be your standard.
LESSON #2: AT 25, YOU'RE JUST GETTING STARTED!
HONEY, YOU'RE JUST GETTING STARTED! 25, 30, 35 - those are your prime years! You are truly just getting started. Taking premed requirements will take you 2 years, medical school is 4 years! I don't include residency because you make money. Yes it's $50-60K gross salary but it's something to live on. The reason why people complain about a $60K gross salary is because they don't know how to manage finances - let's be real! Many people are living well off of that! Okay, you end up being age 32 or 40 by the time you finish medical school, who cares! You still have a whole 30-40 years of practicing medicine! 30-40 years! You will not end your medical career saying "I wish I had 7-10 more years to practice". You are going to be happy to be out the door. You have a WHOLE medical career ahead of you; don't let the fact that you didn't get your medical degree at age 25 hinder you. You can start later than your peers, and end up more successful than them! This is my experience right now in Pharma and will be my experience in medicine! I've gained so much hands-on experience in the world, that will cause me to exceed my peers because I have real world experiences that cannot be "taught" in a classroom. Do not undervalue yourself and what you bring to the table. Age = experience = value!
LESSON #3: GOD IS THE SOLE CREATOR AND OWNER OF TIME!
I am an encourager. I have a gift to encourage people, so I am going to encourage you with the Word of God! God is a God who said that He will restore the years! He said you think you have lost time and years, but I am the Owner and Creator of time! He can literally add years to your life, add years to your medical career, and cause you to be more successful than the ones who started before you! People will have practiced medicine for 50 years and you will have only practiced for 30 years but be prospering over them! This scripture says that you will eat plenty and be satisfied! If you apply this Word to your medical career, it means you will work and work and work and have budding businesses and patients will come to you to be healed, and you will be satisfied with the career you have that you won't even have a need to ask God for more!
Do not be ashamed that you are starting medical school later than others! You will prosper! You will excel. You will exceed even your own expectations. Your eyes have not seen, your hears have not heard, neither has it even entered into your heart the things God has stored up for you if you just believe in Him by faith! God will strengthen you to endure the pre-med and medical school journey! We are on this journey together! I declare and decree life into your medical career, that it shall come to pass and you will declare what good things God has done for you.
Whenever I feel discouraged, I put on a good power outfit, continue to hold my head high and believe that my medical career shall come to pass!
